Information you need to know:

Saturnalia Books Poetry Prize: $1500 and publication by Saturnalia Books

Saturnalia Books Editors Prize: $500 and publication by Saturnalia Books

2020 Judge = Diane Seuss

Guidelines:

  1. Manuscript must be an original work of poetry written in English.
  2. Manuscript must be at least 48 pages in length (not including foreword material).
  3. Author’s name and contact information must not appear on manuscript.
  4. Acknowledgment page is optional. If your manuscript is a finalist, the acknowledgment page will be removed before it is sent to the judge.
  5. Online fee is $30. No refunds will be given to any manuscripts withdrawn from the competition after April 1 deadline.
  6. Former students who have studied “poetry writing” with the judge are ineligible to enter. Friends and family of the judge are also ineligible.
  7. All entries will be considered for both prizes.
  8. Contest winner will be announced in July on the Saturnalia Books website and via email. Please do not contact Saturnalia Books regarding your submission status before August 1.
  9. By submitting to the contest, you agree to be added to Saturnalia Books’ email list.
  10. The Saturnalia Books 2020 submission window has been extended until April 8!

The Malinda A. Markham Memorial Prize in Translation

Information you need to know:

$2000 and publication by Saturnalia Books

Guidelines:

  1. Manuscript must be a translation by a female translator of a female poet. Female is interpreted as anyone who identifies as female.
  2. Manuscript must be an original collection of poetry from one author in any language translated into English.
  3. Manuscript must be at least 48 pages in length (not including foreword material).
  4. The translator’s name must not appear in the manuscript, including any front material.
  5. Manuscript must include an acknowledgments page.
  6. Online fee is $25. No refunds will be given to any withdrawn manuscripts.
  7. Translator must have written permission from either the original poet or their estate.
  8. Contest winner will be announced on the Saturnalia Books website and via email. Please do not contact Saturnalia Books regarding your submission status before January 1.
  9. By submitting to the contest, you agree to be added to Saturnalia Books’ email list.
  10. Submissions will only be accepted electronically.
  11. The winning manuscript will be chosen by Saturnalia Books’ editors.
  12. Submissions will be accepted annually from September 25-October 31.
